Hedge Calculator: Find Your Hedge Bet

Holding a ticket that could cash? Compare both possible net results using a simplified two-outcome hedge model.

Calculate your hedge bet

Enter what your original ticket pays if it wins, what it cost, and the odds on the opposite side.

The total the ticket returns if it wins, stake included.

Odds format

Hypothetical example – replace it with your own numbers.

Hedge stake

$400.00

Equal net result either way: +$500.00

Total staked
$500.00
Net if original bet wins
+$500.00
Net if hedge wins
+$500.00
Rounding difference
$0.00

Not risk-free

The model covers two mutually exclusive outcomes. Pushes, dead heats, commission, changed odds or bet limits make the result invalid.

How the hedge stake is calculated

Hedge stake h = potential payout ÷ decimal odds on the opposite side

If the original bet wins: payout − original stake − h

If the hedge wins: h × decimal odds − original stake − h

Example: your ticket pays $1,000.00, cost $100.00, and the other side is +150 (2.50). The hedge stake is 1,000 ÷ 2.50 = $400.00, the total staked is $500.00, and the net result is +$500.00 either way.

The hedge stake is rounded to the cent because that is what you can actually bet. Both outcomes are then recalculated from the rounded stake, and any difference is shown.

When a hedge locks in a loss

A hedge can lock in a loss. If your ticket pays $120.00 for a $100.00 stake and the other side is −200 (1.50), the hedge stake is $80.00 and the result is -$60.00 whatever happens. The calculator shows that as a loss – it never turns a loss into a win.

Two hypothetical hedges with their stake and net result.
ExampleHedge stakeNet either way
$1,000 payout, $100 stake, +150$400.00+$500.00
$120 payout, $100 stake, −200$80.00-$60.00

Hedging the final leg of a parlay

For a parlay with one unresolved two-way outcome, enter the original ticket’s full potential payout including its stake, the original stake, and the current price on the opposite outcome. Do not enter only the final leg’s odds as the original payout. A draw or another possible settlement must not be left uncovered.

For example, a $20 parlay that would return $500, with the opposite outcome at 2.50, requires a $200 hedge under the equal-net model. Either outcome then nets $500 − $20 − $200 = $280. Several unresolved legs or a same-game market with additional possible outcomes cannot be modeled as one binary hedge.

Parlay cash out versus a hedge

Many sportsbooks offer a cash out, letting you settle a ticket early. The cash-out amount is the sportsbook's own offer and cannot be calculated here. Subtract your original stake from the cash-out offer before comparing that net amount with the hedge model’s net results.

Remember that the hedge model only covers two mutually exclusive outcomes. Pushes, dead heats, commission, line moves and bet limits are not included.
